Despite early financial hurdles and a budget that doubled during planning, the community rallied. Grants from the Sports Council, local councils and over £11,000 raised by local bowlers helped bring the project to life.
The club officially opened its doors on 1st October 1975 with 4 rinks and modest facilities. Members changed next door at Eaton Socon Outdoor Bowls Club, and most of the early equipment was donated or borrowed. Still, the enthusiasm was undeniable.
The Sports Council awarded a grant of £87,015, but by 1999, the project estimate had risen to £411,961. With help from members and an increase on the grant to £191,771, work began in May 2000. Navigating several setbacks along the way, the extension was eventually completed on 15th September 2000. By 2003 membership peaked at 789.
The club faced its biggest challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic, when membership fell to 550. While numbers have since stabilized, the club is now focused on regrowth and warmly welcomes new members.
St Neots Indoor Bowls Club is available for members and non-members to play bowls. (Non-members/Guests can play a maximum of 3 two-hour sessions before being required to join). You do not need to be fully equipped to come and give it a go, we have a full range of bowls you can borrow at any time.
